Preserving and operating locomotives are core to the mission of the Rochester Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society's
Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. Our dedicated
volunteers continue to keep our eight diesel locomotives operating, our Plymouth Model BL gas-mechanical on its continued path to complete restoration, and our two steam locomotives inching ever
closer to seeing their pressure gauges leave the zero mark. To
continue to make progress at all levels on our locomotives, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum needs your help and
financial support. Thus we have created the Locomotive Preservation Fund.
Our first goal for this fund was to match the National Railway Historical Society National Railway Heritage Grant the Rochester Chapter NRHS and its R&GV Railroad Museum received in August 2007 in the amount of $1800.00. This NRHS grant amount provided funding for three of the eight new replacement locomotive starting batteries needed for Lehigh Valley Railroad ALCO RS-3m #211. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum needed the help to raise the rest of the funds for the other five to make a complete set of eight. This now one-of-kind "Hammerhead" RS-3m is operational, but can not start itself. The new batteries will allow the engine to be started and operated with ease on the museum's demonstration railroad.
The museum is pleased to announce that as of September 1, 2008, the fundraising goal has been reached, the batteries purchased, and delivered to the museum. The old batteries have already been removed and with some repair and repainting of the locomotive's battery boxes, the new batteries should be installed very soon completing this project. Thank you to all who contributed and to the NRHS for their support.
Our Locomotive Preservation Fund will continue. With eleven locomotives to care for, we will soon announce our second goal for the fund and hope everyone will continue to support the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum's locomotive preservation efforts.
