Volunteer Open House

Saturday, May 9, 2009

The museum will host an open house for volunteers as part of National Train Day. Details TBA.

Opening Weekend

Sunday, May 17, 2009

The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum opens for the season, and joint operations with the New York Museum of Transportation begin. This year’s opening weekend will feature NYMT trolleys and R&GVRRM diesel trains.

Caboose Day

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Known as vans, cabin cars, crummies, or “the little red caboose”, visitors are welcome on this special day to ride the rails and live the life of a railroader for a day aboard several freight train cabooses. A trolley will take you part of the way to Industry where knowledgeable guides will help you aboard a caboose for the rest of the trip.

Trolley Time

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Celebrate the history of streetcars and interurban trolleys. Learn how a trolley works and tour the museum substation. Discover trolley energy efficiency over other modes of transportation. Find out about bringing back rail rapid transit to Rochester. Take a look at restoration work on century-old Rochester trolleys.

Diesel Days

Saturday, August 22, 2009
Sunday, August 23, 2009

This two-day event celebrates the diesel locomotive. Several of our nine operating diesels, from small 600 horsepower switchers to large 1000 and 1200 horsepower road switchers, will be operating all day long. Come on out, see, hear and take a ride on these historic locomotives! For this event, the museum is open for extended hours from 10AM to 6PM, and special event admission prices apply. Kids dressed as engineers are admitted free!

Closing Weekend

Sunday, October 25, 2009

R&GV Railroad Museum closes for the season, and track car and train rides end. The New York Museum of Transportation remains open at reduced admission rate.

Holley Trolley Rides (NYMT)

Saturday, December 5, 2009
Sunday, December 6, 2009

Santa may still use reindeer power, but New York Museum of Transportation visitors can enjoy a ride on an authentic 80 year-old trolley car, recalling another time when families rode the big interurban trolleys from their rural homes to do their holiday shopping in the city. Also, nothing says Christmas like model trains, and the museum’s large model railroad will be running five trains at once.
